What a bonbon of a book Cookies for my Orc Neighbor was! I devoured this book in a couple of hours. It’s full of typical tropes, but it was fun to read.
Grace lives next door to Alden. And she’s completely fascinated by him, to the point where no human guy can really hold her interest. But Alden is a bit of a recluse. Grace only sees him going out and coming in, but when Alden gets a puppy, she decides to take matters into her own hands and start up a conversation. However, it’s winter.
So why is that a big deal? Well, it seems that in winter the orcs are, er, a *bit* more interested in mating than other times of the year. As a matter of fact, they are almost compelled to seek out a mate. So when Alden realizes that Grace is interested in him, and when he sees how lovely and charming she is, and when he learns that she can cook—well, Alden is pretty much a goner.
There’s nothing revelatory in here. But I thought this was a charming little tale of orcs utterly integrated into our society (Alden likes to head to a bar that serves orc ale, and he rejoices in the fact that his old home has high ceilings so his horns aren’t hitting everything when he’s inside).
So if you’re looking for something in the spirit of the season, that’ll make you smile, and that features two protagonists who can’t deny their overwhelming interest in one another, pick up Cookies for my Orc Neighbor. After all, we deserve a bonbon every once in a while.
