Kulti by Mariana Zapata

5.0

This book... What can I say about it? It's a slow burn and it's really long but not for a second the plot left me bored. It was consuming and I was intrigued to read what happened next. I couldn't put it down untill I finished it!
So, Sal Casillas is a soccer player in Houston. Mariana Zapata writes her main characters in a way that I can relate to them. And Sal was the best player on the team along with her friends Jenny and Harlow. I liked the side characters in this book a lot and Sal's dad was who I loved the most out of them. The first part of the book was basically about how Sal idolized Reiner Kulti, the retired international soccer icon and how big of a crush she had on him. And imagine her surprise when Kulti takes place of the assistant coach on her team! Apparently something happened between Kulti and Sal's brother Eric during a game in the past so Sal's loyalties lied with her brother.
Sal was so excited to be coached by Kulti but all that went in drain when he actually showed up. Kulti at first didn't interact with anyone and obviously he didn't take an effort to guide and coach any of the players. As the book progressed Sal and Kulti somehow became friends. She gave him lifts when Kulti's driver wasn't available and invited him to play softball league with her and her friend Marc. She realised how lonely Kulti really was and the way the both of them sort of just hit off after that was the best part. The age gap didn't make me uncomfortable. The time Kulti and Sal spent with Sal's family was really refreshing and the fact that Sal's dad always went speeches and starstruck when Kulti was near him was so funny!
Mariana Zapata writes slow burns and trust me the good part is worth the wait. The evolution of Sal and Kulti's relationship was beautiful. Overall the book is worth the read and money!
