I went into this almost blind and with low expectations, because aside from This Savage Song I wasn't that big of a fan of Schwab's YA stuff. However, I really, thoroughly enjoyed this. Even though the ending was formulaic and quite predictable, the concept and the writing carried the book (Schwab never misses with those) and I couldn't put it down. Roland is my favorite character, I just couldn't stop fangirling over his scenes. His dynamic with Mackenzie was so Giles-Buffy coded and if you know me, you know how I feel about Giles
