i feel like this book has been (and will probably continue to be) misinterpreted and misunderstood. an intense and intriguing feminist noir about the interrelation of sex and violence, with an incendiary ACAB politic and a flawed protagonist whose contradictions are brought to the fore — primarily, her complicity while yearning for freedom. i absolutely love Jane Campion’s film adaptation and recommend it alongside this text. i have to say that i prefer the film’s ending, but in the cut remains brave and provocative and searing. how do women discover their sexuality in a terrain of misogyny and violence? how are their desires shaped by their fears?
