In Love: A Memoir of Love and Loss
by Amy Bloom
WOW. I heard an excerpt of this book on "This American Life," and I loved that, so I knew I wanted to read this book in its entirety. This is a memoir about losing one's spouse to Alzheimer's and making the difficult decision to help him end his life.
I'd file this under "perfect memoirs," along with Know My Name by Chanel Miller and Truth and Beauty by Ann Patchett. From the line-level writing (witty, smart, self-deprecating), to the story itself (a tragic love story, as well as a window into a system that desperately needs repair), to the pitch-perfect delivery (unemotional in a way that will stir you), this memoir checks all the boxes. I'll be recommending it to so many people. I loved Bloom's style/tone so much that I'm curious to dig into her novels.
A+++ / Five stars / A must read.
