The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman

5.0

4.5/5
Interesting that I loved this one so much because I often have issue with narrators who are voicy, particularly when that voice is supposed to be funny, ESPECIALLY in sf/f/h. At first, I was wary. However, I fell into it and ended up really loving it? It's incredibly fast-paced (which sometimes doesn't work for me either!) yet somehow really allows us to get to know the cast of characters. The ending didn't knock me off my feet or anything but felt right for the book. Honestly the only thing docking it from the pure five stars is just a feeling and the fact that some of the action sequences could be a bit confusing. But the writing was doing some very interesting things, which forced me to pay attention at all times, even though the quest our characters went on was happening at lightning speed. I am honestly a bit surprised based on how I felt about the first few chapters how much I ended up loving this one, and I'm super excited that there seems to be a prequel coming out next year!
