Obernewtyn
by Isobelle Carmody
2022 review:
It was okay. I wasn't as astounded by it as I was in 2009, and I found it a little more higgilty in parts, but it certainly wasn't bad. I knocked my rating down to 3 stars as opposed to 4. The pacing is a bit awkward in parts, and the writing seemed to be a wash of what occurred and not all that detailed.
The font is very 80s. I don't know how else to describe it.
I really wish the map were clearer. Someone said in one of the printings there was a larger, full-size map of the country Obernewtyn was set in, and when turned upside down it was clearly Australia. I'd love to see that if anyone has a copy of it.

One of the better books I've read recently. I was quite surprised, honestly. I'm a fan of post-apocalyptic books, for whatever reason, and this one just seemed to suit my tastes. There's no particular reason why. The book is poorly written in parts, and in some areas, it's never exactly said what's going on (such as the events in the cave and what exactly Elspeth is doing). But apart from these areas, it seems to work.
And, furthermore, none of the characters really pulled me in. I liked the limited screentime Rosamunde had before she returned, and Cameo. To be honest, I'm not sure if I'll actively pursue reading the other books, but I did enjoy the first novel, for what it's worth. It seemed to fall apart towards the end, but everything else worked, surprisingly well.
Overall, rather enjoyable and perhaps suited to someone a little bit younger than myself.
