Cards on the Table
by Agatha Christie
3.5/5
Mr Shaitana was a man of odd interests. He has the look of Mephistophiles and knows the knack of extracting information from people and then blackmail them. He hosts a party for M.Poirot to display his collection of murderers who had got away without punishment.
Unfortunately, during the party, he is murdered in his own house under the nose of our haughty M.Poirot, Colonel Race, Superindent Battle from Scotland Yard and Mrs Oliver, a noted crime novelist.
There are four suspects -the bold, audacious Dr Roberts, cool-headed Mrs Lorrimer, far-sighted Major Despard and the damsel-in-distress Miss Meredith.
There are no finger-prints, no alibi, no eye-witnesses. Only the weapon of crime and four papers with the scores of a game of bridge played by the four suspects, who were known to have murdered before.
The book is all about the investigation carried out by the four sleuths - M.Poirot, Colonel Race, Superindent Battle and Mrs Oliver.
The book was well-written but as always - you have to expect the unexpected in Christie's novels. There were no plotholes, as far as my knowledge. Overall a good read. But did not surprise me much as certain other great novels of Christie.
M.Poirot, as always reiterates himself to be right always. Though it kind of irks me sometimes, I always loved his character. Once again, M.Poirot concludes based on psychology rather than tangible evidences. The story did justice to Poirot's character!
