Vampires in the Lemon Grove: And Other Stories
by Karen Russell
This took me forever to finish this collection. After I read three stories and was only taken with one, I left it on my to-finish pile way too long. I wish I hadn't - the rest were really inventive, clever reads.
The visuals from "Reeling for the Empire" stuck in my head LONG after reading it, and "The Barn at the End of our Term" is the most original story I've read in a while.
"Be prepared to see a black-nosed victim of frostbite; a boatload of probable cannibals, suspiciously fat and sheepish in their snug parkas; a scurvy-riddled tailgaiter in a lifeboat, vestless and begging oranges. Don't ask questions."
