Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas

4.0

Going into this book I was curious how Maas was going to handle the three MCs in three different (physical and mental) places. I think she did an okay job with this, especially considering she added in even more characters. (I feel like I need to take notes to keep track of everyone sometimes) I did think it took too long for me to buy into the new characters and sometimes the shifting of pov from one chapter to the next was really unsatisfying.

That being said, I really am invested in these new characters. I am intrigued by the dynamic between Celaena and Rowan. I have a zillion questions that I'm sure are yet to be revealed in the next books in the series. I did feel like Dorian's storyline was a little neglected and when he did get chapters, they felt like fillers. Chaol's storyline was interesting but I found I was more interested in Aedion than Chaol himself. Originally, I HATED Manon, but I'm now obsessed with her and the 13 and mostly ABRAXOS (seriously, my favorite character in the series).

SpoilerI highlighted SO MUCH because I read ACOTAR and CC series first and I'm trying to find all these connections between the worlds. Sometimes I feel like I'm reading too much into something and I'm making connections out of something that isn't even a real connection and that's making me a little crazy. The group chat is probably SICK of my antics too but alas!

Overall, I think the book struggled with cohesion between all the storylines but the world building and characters were interesting enough to overcome that.

It didn't pass my escape test, I found myself a couple times thinking how I would have re-written a line or scene.
