Breathless by Jennifer Niven

5.0

breathless may be the best coming-of-age novel i have ever read.
six stars for niven's novel.
where do i even begin with this book????????? this is the greatest thing i have read in what seems like so long.
breathless is claude's story, but more than anything it's niven's story, shining through the pages. in the disclaimer, which almost brought me to tears again, Jennifer talks about how when she was eighteen her parents came and told her they were getting divorced. and how the floor fell out from under her feet.
this is a story that includes sex and virginity in it, but most importantly this book is about life. and how you can never predict what's going to happen next, or even where or who you'll meet, but that's okay. it's all part of life.
this book has such important themes. i don't want to say messages, because the truth is claude is just someone trying to get by in life like the rest of us. discovering life and love and heartbreak and loss like every single other person in this book.
the issues she faces, the people she meets, nothing officially ever gets resolved. but there is growth, and mindset change, and acceptance about where she is and who she will become. and that for me made this book.
taking a moment to briefly talk about miah crew, Jeremiah is literally an angel sent down from heaven. are we sure that the island wasn't heaven and claude and miah weren't angels??????
if i could write an essay on this story, it would be about how miah and claude were the DEFINITION of right person, wrong time (wrong time wrong time wrong time), and simultaneously the perfect timing for claude at that moment. they both taught each other such valuable lessons on just life in general and it was literally the most amazing and heartbreaking thing i've ever read.
the ending just had me bawling. i was sniffling and crying like a little baby. the quotes were just hitting in all the right places, i will have so many of these on my walls.
claude and niven combined was just the most amazing thing i've ever read. i am in LOVE with her writing style, and claude as a narrator was just so real and relatable to me.
there is so much i want to say but just you need to read this book please it is the best coming of age novel i've read in so long.
I'll end this review with a quote from niven's disclaimer. yes, i read the whole thing. it was ah=mazing. stupendous. incredible. breathtaking...(see what i did there??)
"now, close the book.
but first, remember to open yourself up to love and possibility, to almostness and maybe. use your voice. let others in. choose your future. choose your body. choose yourself.
and go out there and write your life."
