Me Before You
by Jojo Moyes
This is not a love story.
I believe the intense circumstances under which our two characters meet created an atmosphere that could be mistaken for love. Moyes did a fine job of laying the foundation for real love, she just never built upon it.
These characters are not in love, but they each have a mission. Though Will's becomes two-fold, he never loses sight of his original goal. It is apparent that Lou's life needs some rustling, she has potential, but without a catalyst, she will never realize any of it.
This is not a love story, but it IS one big social question.
It challenges you to consider your convictions and beliefs on the matter.
At points, I understood Will's position and I did have empathy for him. But, ultimately, I felt his decision was a weak, selfish one and revealed the shallowness of his feelings for Lou and frankly, everyone else in his life.
So, on second thought - I guess this story could be considered a love story.
Will IS most definitely in love...with himself.
