I did not expect to hate this book. But goddamn did I want to rip my paperback copy in half multiple times while reading. In fact, ’hate’ might be too soft a word to fully describe my distaste for it.
Ben Rosewood is the first character in the Glimmer Falls series that I have actively despised. He came across as a whiny, self-pitying incel who desperately needed to sort out his priorities—helping his sister run for mayor should not have taken precedence over helping Eleonore free herself from a literal slave-contract.
There was no romantic chemistry between the main characters, and Ben occasionally taking the time to comment on Eleonore’s ’sexiness’ felt very icky considering the power-imbalance between the two.
The third-act conflict was also extremely predictable and felt like watching a car crash in slow motion.
Somehow, this book managed to hit all of my least favorite tropes. I truly wish I could unread it.
