This is a heartbreaking and bittersweet folk horror story, though the horror was more thriller than horror. The horror stems from Chickasaw and Apache culture and we follow Kari, an emo metal head who has an affinity for Steven King books. I enjoyed a lot of this book, from the unique plot to King allusions, to how real each character was. And trust me I did not like Debbie at all at the beginning but with time I realized how dynamic the character was and everyone well except the villain ofc grew on me. Though i think this would have been better written in third POV because the writing wasn't immersive, there was a lot of telling rather than showing that I think would've been better pulled off in a different POV. There was also several moments that could have been shown instead such as at the end
where Kari mentioned Debbie always bought little gifts for people, it feels sudden despite being small and would've tied the ending together if maybe we saw this at the beginning or throughout the novel
. Another example is
when Kari got the call for her credit, she spent a paragraph explaining why she was getting the call instead of just writing about the process before her hotel stay so that the reader can guess who the call is from
. But overall an enjoyable page turner that made me tear up for Kari and Debbie at the end.
