True Grit by Charles Portis
4.0

A real landscape, unforgiving, forbidding, like its characters. Would love to see a movie, but would it do the book justice? An actually funny book with many memorable moments and lines, my favourite being: He thinks they is a horsefly on his back!
Mattie is definitely annoyingly precocious, but at times her 'Sunday School Piety', as Donna Tartt puts it, can make you snort at the right moment. And also all the repeated lines, like Mattie's I have a good lawyer, and Tom Chaney's Everything is against me; nothing is going right for me, both somehow started to get funnier and funnier.
Do wish they got to meet one last time, but it was quite clear that Rooster couldn't handle emotions or commitment to any one thing for too long. But I guess that makes it the perfect cowboy/wild west/outlaw story.  Definitely should be a required read at school.
