An absolutely beautifully written and thought-provoking story following the characters of the Jahani family, first and second-generation Iranian-Americans. This book was pretty much my first real exposure to Iranian culture, Americanized as the Jahani’s lifestyles were, and it truly felt like stepping out of my shoes and into theirs.
What initially piqued my interest about this book was the promise of a complicated family dynamic, which I am no stranger to… but I found myself utterly captivated by the pain and frustrations of these women experiencing the conflicting feelings that come with generational changes. I found myself thinking about them often when I wasn’t reading.
“A tragedy didn’t stand alone; it was one in a connected sequence, like a chain, each link steered by the one before.” (357)
