Blue Shadows Fall by Lenore Stutznegger

3.0

*3.5/5* - I would also like to thank Lenore Stutznegger for the e-advanced reader's copy of the story for an honest review

Blue Shadows Fall combines the sci-fi element of a post-apocalyptic world with slight fantasy elements. Blue is an 18 year old girl with a secret. She has the ability to see for miles more than any other human, a trait that the long forgotten Shadow Elves possessed that killed off most of humanity. In her small, enclosed world, only a few know her secret, and Blue can't live the life she wishes she could. But when she starts having visions of outsiders and a light lit outside the walls, her gift isn't such a secret anymore. Blue must trust her instincts to help save her people and her brother, who was outside the wall and in grave danger.

I thought this was a very original story, with the post-apocalyptic world being created hundreds of years prior due to some sort of plague that turned people into almost nightmarish elves, with swirling black eyes and ethereal appearances. There's also something kind of eerie about a town that is closed off from the rest of the world, not knowing what is out there. I also liked the idea of heightened senses as a kind of "super power". The ending also took me by surprise, which I always find necessary in books!

The few things that kind of fell flat for me personally was the writing style. There were times that it was easy flowing, and other times where the characters sounded like country-bumpkins who didn't have the same vocabulary they did in other places. Some of the characters also didn't feel like they had much depth to them, which made it hard to feel a connection. I wish there had been a little more depth to the entire story, more back-story and explanation, and more character development. I felt the potential for a really in-depth world, but it just didn't quite get there for me.

I would definitely recommend checking out this book to anyone who enjoys sci-fi/fantasy crossover type stories, and enjoys surprise endings. I had an entirely different idea for what I thought was going to happen than actually did, and it intrigues me to see what would happen if the story continues!
