Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy

4.0

This has been my second reading of Far From the Madding Crowd. I had forgotten how beautiful the language is.
I hesitate to say this, but the story is excruciatingly painful to read. It is that feeling of impending doom. This isn’t a spoiler… it is just how it feels to me and I read it with my hand on my heart in trepidation nearly the whole way though.
I know this is excellent storytelling but Hardy is a cruel manipulator of my sensibilities.
Five stars for gorgeous writing, one removed for the anguish
