Tomorrow, When the War Began by John Marsden

5.0

“All these words, words like 'evil' and 'vicious', they meant nothing to Nature. Yes, evil was a human invention.”

Ellie and her friends return home from their camping trip to find their homes in shambles and their families gone. With no power, their pets dead and seemingly their whole town disappeared, they slowly realize something has gone terribly wrong. Their country has gone to war, their town invaded and only Ellie and her friends are left free. Now they have an impossible decision to make, to fight or hide. With Hell as their base, this group of friends must try to hit back.

This is easily one of my favorite book series that I have ever had the pleasure of reading. I think this is going to be more of a fanatical raving than an objective review. Marsden does a fantastic job of pulling you in from the very first page. Ellie is a great character, never to caught up in the teenage drama yet simultaneously keeps a lively spirit even through the worst of it all. Even though just the first book, the characters are all given good descriptions and development.

As an Australian myself, I find this story to be riveting. The idea of being invaded is far from our minds but seems so very real on these pages. Marsden does a great job of weaving the real in with the fiction-making you question if an invasion is just around the corner. He keeps his characters and his plot moving forward at all times, and it is refreshing to see the teenagers making life-saving long-term decisions as they gear up for a long fight.

I cannot recommend giving this book ago enough, from high school to now I have loved this series. It is simply outstanding.
