The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells

2.0

H. G. Wells is very good at thinking of innovative and haunting ideas, I am not hooked on the books but I do admire his influence and the way he thinks about the what ifs of the world.

There is also definitely racist overtones that were really hard to overlook, especially as I had just read Mexican Gothic that looks at eugenics. There was some allusions to Frankenstein I believe with the conversation of humanity and those constructed through sewing up parts of other things and I am interested to see if Orwell found inspiration for Animal Farm here or Golding for Lord of The Flies but overall, it was a man wandering an island as he remarked about how these evolved animals were like non white people. It could have led to interesting conversations about science at the time, but rating the humanity of these beasts based on a continuum of western culture was real hard to sit through.
