As soon as I saw this book existed I needed a copy. Look at that cover.

The narrator/MC is a fat teenage gay boy. He is a bit over the top, but also incredibly sweet and gentle. Felipe is in therapy, because his mom wants him to have a safe place to talk. She even made it a point to say that therapy was not bad and that a lot of people would be better off if they went to therapy before things got so bad. It was nice to see that therapy was seen as a positive thing and a thing that could be helpful to more people.

Felipe has a wonderful relationship with his mom. She is a bit much, but in that loving and arty way. I can see exactly where Felipe takes after her and why they get along so well. I just adored their relationship and interactions. When she tries to lecture him, I was laughing so hard. I wish she was my mom or my mother in law. I loved that she volunteered with kids and made jokes. She was clearly not perfect, but she loved Felipe so much and it was so obvious even to him.

The background characters were also pretty lively. I really liked Melissa and Becky. They were alive and their impact on the story was so huge. It made sense for how they appeared and how they interacted. It was wonderful to see such a cute and wonderful couple. I would love to see a spin-off of them. Their meet-cute had me giggling. It was so unbelievable and dorky.

The biggest issue I had with the book was also one of the big strengths of the book. Felipe was really fixated on his body to the detriment of a lot of other things. I can get that fixation. I wanted Felipe to grow independent of his attraction for Caio. He did, but also didn’t. I loved that Felipe was growing and not everything was solved neatly at the end. I just wish more of it had been not related to a boy. I wanted more for him than relying on a boy for happiness. So I stand at four and a half stars, unless I get a sequel.
