Wow.

This book is the story of Ada and her brother Jamie, two kids who are evacuated from London to live with a grieving spinster in the countryside. The war in the title refers to WWII, but also and more prominently to the war Ada fights within herself against the damage done by her abusive mother.

The emotional growth here is amazing, as all three of them learn a new way of living and begin to help each other heal. Ada's journey is not an easy one, but it's heartbreaking and profound and wonderful all at once. This was so good.
