River Woman, River Demon by Jennifer Givhan

dark emotional mysterious tense medium-paced

5.0

Where do I even begin to tell you how much I LOVED this story?!?!?!!!! Talk about keeping me on the edge of my seat while also giving me dark magick and drama for days. Phew!

Meet Eva Santos Moon. She's a Chicana artist who also practices brujería and curanderisma, the ancient spiritual ways of her ancestors. When Eva's husband, a professor and Magickian, is arrested for the murder of their close friend, Eva's life is turned upside down. What follows is a thrilling, yet haunting, mystery about love, loss, family, and the lengths one will go to to keep it all together.

I loved everything that Jennifer Givhan created in this novel. Psychological thriller? Check. Folk magick? Check. Mexican-American Chicana culture? Check! Giving me the good and amazing without glossing over the bad and ugly? Check!! I voraciously consumed each and every page up until the bitter end. This book had me feeling all sorts of conflicting emotions but I couldn't put it down! It was food for my soul and I learned so many things about different types of magick. Total awesomeness! Even when I didn't like the choices Eva made, I couldn't help but root for her. I highly recommend giving this one a read!

I received a digital review copy of this book for free from the author, Blackstone Publishing, and BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily as a courtesy.
