Faefever by Karen Marie Moning
5.0

FF is another solid installment in the Fever series. I am captivated by the story of Mac's reluctant crusade to save the world from destruction by Unseelie. The plot moves forward at breakneck speed, never lagging and never losing my interest. I love that the story is so long (5 volumes) with a myriad of characters and a twisting, turning and at times somewhat convoluted plot.

I really like Mac and her development as the story progresses from average 22 year old young woman resisting the responsibilities of adulthood to a tested and hardened warrior shaped and strengthened by her extraordinary experiences. I think she is a strong female lead, and I like that she realizes she is becoming a major player in the game and a force to be reckoned with.

I love Barrons, a perfectly written anti-hero. He is dark, mysterious, dangerous, cold and ruthless; but with a definite soft spot for Mac. It isn't obvious, but if you read between the lines it is clear that " he who feels nothing" feels a very definite something for her; and it seems to unnerve him. And that alone speaks volumes.

FF ended in a very dark place and in her note to readers, the author brings attention back to a previous quote: Your joy can fill you only as deeply as your sorrow has carved you. I don't think the finale of FF can be read in human terms or put into a human world; because that is not what this is. Here in this fantasy with man and monsters from another plane of existence, Mac's horrifying experience of helplessness and humiliation is going to become transformative; and I believe she is going to rise from the ashes like the mythical Phoenix - with this incarnation a stronger and more lethal version than the last.

At least that's what I'm hoping for!!
