Dracula by Bram Stoker

5.0

This review is really based on my first time reading this so I don't know if it would hold on a reread.
I'm more of a fan of werewolves. Vampires haven't really been my thing to the point I've actually never seen any of the movies–but I'm familiar with the story, obviously.

Now having read it, I can say the novel was way more interesting than I expected it and vampires are cool lol. I was especially hooked with Jonathan's journals at Castle Dracula and I was really impressed and even a little surprised at how modern some of the dialogue, exposition, and tone was at points. There were some truly creepy and unnerving moments, like with that guy Renfield who kept asking Dr. Seward for bugs to eat. Dracula's stalking of Lucy and the outcome was engaging as well. Even though I've now learned there's some heavy xenophobic and puritanical and sexist themes in this book and Dracula's a stand-in to express that, and given this was published in 1897, I'll let the good outweigh the bad and still enjoy my first impressions of the book. Also most people don't like the epistolary format for this novel but I think that gave it a unique flair and made it stand out from being just another vampire story. The ending could have been less anti-climactic but really a superb classic novel.
