The Shadow of Kyoshi by F.C. Yee
5.0

Okay, wow. The first book offered so much depth into Kyoshi's past, and in this one, we finally get to hear from Avatar Kuruk! Oh. My. Gosh. I need a book about that man pronto. I loved the redemption arc this book gave him, and it was so heart wrenching to know what all he had to go through in secret. That man doesn't get near enough credit for what he had to deal with.

Kyoshi's journey to become the Avatar and the wisdom she had to use from Avatar Kuruk brought the story together seamlessly. I loved the added layers brought in by the spirit world, Yun's continued narrative and story arc, and the intricacies of their stories coming back together.

I loved that this book really showcased Kyoshi being a flawed individual constantly having to learn and work toward her Avatar status. Nothing came naturally to her, and she had to work twice as hard to fit in with those around her. Her transformation and her journey of coming into her own was powerful. Watching the plans she devised, the sacrifices she made, and the advice she had to seek out really drove the plot and made it a fantastic story. I'd love to see more about how she created Kyoshi Island, the founding of the Kyoshi Warriors, and more of her story!
