The Aberrationists by Ray O'Meara

5.0

Synopsis:
William Kendrick of South Carolina wakes up one fine school day to a house of horrors. A repetitive series of dreams which seem to be increasing in clarity recently. His adoptive parents bring in Brandt, the man who has something extraordinary to share with Will. But when Will goes 'missing', his friend Andy sets out to find what happened with him.

Brandt reveals the Aberrationists to be hybrids born of human-demon unions. And that Will is one of them. An age-old feud has started with the birth of Will, and it's his responsibility now to kill the man who decimated his family once to settle an old score. Brandt is someone who used to work for an organisation called the Collective once, an organisation that works behind-the-scenes to stop an almost immortal man from staying immortal. Will William, Brandt, and the Collective be able to stop the inevitable from happening?

Review:
What a world Ray O'Meara has created in his debut novel! What a blast of a story this is! There are interactive illusions, an odd assortment of people running an organisation that hunts demons, eerie masquerade masks, a man who has survived for more than two hundred years (and no, he's not a vampire!). There are mercenaries, archaeologists, illusionists, people who can control your mind and bend yours to their will, in all people with often unknown and hidden powers.

A paranormal mystery which unfolds slowly with new revelations every few chapters. It kept me hooked right till the very end. The story barrelled towards what seemed to be a premature conclusion but every time I felt like that, the author had quite the surprises in store. We are gradually introduced to The Collective, one member of which is Frances Whitworth – my favourite character after William.

There are many mysteries from the long-ago past that are unfolded as the story progresses. There's also a prophecy on the lines of an ultimate purge of the entire humanity from the earth. Whitworth was a revelation in the end. And what a bloodbath that thunderous climax was. With the way things ended, do I smell a sequel in the works? Or a trilogy? Or a series?

I loved the fact that within the paranormal story, the author infused a little bit of romance. A book I'll definitely read again and recommend to you all.
