The Family Experiment by John Marrs

2.0

This book was an interesting story wasted on lackluster writing, preventing me from getting into it at all.

There was no emotion in the writing, and the characters were very dull and there were so many of them that they were hard to tell apart since they didn’t have very fleshed-out personalities.

The way information was held back and then revealed also felt really artificial and forced to me. In one chapter the author would just decide to end on a cliffhanger and then in a later chapter he would just pick up that thought and reveal the information that had been withheld previously. It’s kind of hard to describe, but it felt like the author was in control of when stuff was revealed, rather than the characters figuring it out for themselves. It just didn’t feel like a natural progression of twists and turns. I did also find the “twists” to be fairly predictable, except for a couple of small things, and there were a couple of plot holes, too.

I did enjoy the concept of the show and the world, I just wish it had been better-executed.
