I think this story goes over some  important issues we have in our society.
With that said, when writing about the serious topic about rape it needs to be done with care and accuracy. I do feel like the way the town reacted sadly is realistic, however the way Maya handles everything felt rushed. Especially how it ended and seeing him again at the end.
The start of the book is super slow paced and honestly a little confusing. The first section is over 2 days. Then the rest is over weeks. This causes the rest of the story to feel rushed.
