thanks to the publisher for a providing me a copy of this book! and now i'm finally getting to this review.

this book rocks, and rightfully earned its place in my top reads of 2023. this is the first book of this kind that i have read, and this book has led me to seek out more books like this, where the story unfolds in front of you via some "found footage" (or in this case documents). this book has something to say about true crime and our obsession with cults and finding the people impacted by the fallout. i think the nature of the way the book is written keeps it from stating it explicitly, but the subtext is certainly there for those who are looking.
