The Great Passage by Shion Miura

4.0

When I read the blurb on this book, I knew I would enjoy it. A book on the creation of a dictionary, and a book set in Japan.
Years ago, I read [b:The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary|25019|The Professor and the Madman A Tale of Murder, Insanity and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary|Simon Winchester|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1407110918s/25019.jpg|1628566] by [a:Simon Winchester|14053|Simon Winchester|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1286848563p2/14053.jpg], which was a wonderful read (I had always fantasized about having a copy of the unabridged edition of the Oxford English Dictionary). In many ways The Great Passage is very similar.
I have read many Japanese novels, classic and contemporary, from the Tale of the Genji to IQ84.
The Great Passage is a book about the monumental task of creation of a new dictionary. It's about words and the importance of them in our world.
A great reading experience.
