I had to see what the hype was all about!
So... The elephant in the room is obviously the way it's written as if these folks are barbarians and these (mostly white) ladies show up everyone's pumped to see them and even the main character is kind of patronizing. Fair warning that you have to suspend a certain amount of feminist and anti-colonial critical thinking when reading this.
I was a bit shocked at how cavalierly the sexual violence was treated at the beginning of the book. Even after going back and looking at the content warnings I'm not sure it would have prepared me.
I gave it 2.5 stars. Didn't hate it but didn't love it either. Kinda problematic.
