The Gods of Gotham by Lyndsay Faye
3.0

Set in New York City in mid 19th century, we get to experience the creation of NYPD, the police force. Our protagonist is Timothy Wilde, telling the story of how he joined the copper stars after he lost everything in a fire. He is immediately confronted with a gruesome case to solve, when an Irish child prostitute shows up on his doorstep covered in blood.

I enjoyed the setting far more than the actual story. The glimpses you get of life in NYC at that period of time are fascinating. The characters however left me a bit cold. There's also this whole lingo being used that is never explained anywhere which I found a bit irritating, like kinchin mabs. A glossary would have been nice.

I wasn't bored but also not grabbed enough that I would read more Timothy Wilde stories.
