The Riddle at Gipsy's Mile
by Clara Benson
I very much doubt that these books were written in the 1920ies - especially after reading this one. Although delightful to read, it just doesn't sound right. I cannot tell why I think so but perhaps it is the length which is sometimes needed to explain details the contemporary reader would not have bothered to know about, perhaps it is the closeness between Angela and her servants, perhaps it is the effort involved to create atmosphere - but I do think it is written in recent times and written well.
BUT although I like it and would not have minded reading a modern novel set in the 20ies I kind of do mind being cheated - I cannot help but feel a little bit annoyed and start to concentrate more and more on possible mistakes or giveaways to confirm my suspicions ...
