Amina's Voice
by Hena Khan
Lovely slice of life middle school tale. Amina has just entered middle school and is struggling with too many changes at once: her lifelong best friend wants to hang out with Emily of the mean girl crowd, not to mention legally change her name; her uncle is coming from Pakistan for three months and the family has to impress him; her brother is growing up and might be rebelling. And then there's Amina's ability to sing and her phobia of public performance--no solos in the choir concert for her. The plot is subtle, but believable. I enjoyed that many characters weren't who Amina thought.
The narrator has got to stop emphasizing every word of dialogue. It's weird.
