Pint of No Return by Dana Mentink

This is the first book in the Shake Shop Mystery series and I found it to be an easy and entertaining read. Trinidad Jones is picking up the pieces of her life post-divorce and finds herself in the hometown of her ex-husband turning the building he deeded to her into a shake shop. I thought Trinidad was a good main character. She is likable and as an accidental sleuth, she is cautious in searching out clues. She is surrounded by a diverse and solid group of secondary characters that help her with her journey to clear her new friend and fellow ex-wife of her former husband from murder charges. There is really good potential with all of the characters and a lot of room for character growth. I kind of liked that Trinidad ended up in the same town as the other two ex-wives.

There is a lot going on in terms of the mystery. There are plenty of suspects, motives, and most of all secrets that need to be uncovered before Trinidad can help her friend Juliette. The author doesn't make it easy to choose the killer because it seems everyone has something to hide that could potentially cause them to murder. In the end, I did not guess the identity of the killer, having been misled by some of the red herrings dropped by the author.

This was a solid start to a new cozy series that I found very enjoyable. I will be continuing with the series to see where the author takes the characters in future books.

I voluntarily read a digital advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher, Poisoned Pen Press, through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
