Some of the best imagery I've ever read in my life lies in this poem despite it just being a tale of a man walking through a nightmarish landscape trying to find the tower. I believe Robert Browning that this came to him in a dream with no allegorical intention because the flow of the story feels very surreal, and it's a testament to his skill as a poet that I was so deeply moved by Roland's invoking of his fallen friends as a climax that I don't even find myself desiring that deeply to know what's actually in the dark tower.
