The Story of Doctor Dolittle
by Hugh Lofting
Five stars for clever, talking animals, some beautifully written prose, and pirates who abandon their dastardly pursuits for a life of peaceful life of farming.
Zero stars for the racism and white supremacy that runs throughout portions the book. If I were sharing this with kids, I’d have some serious conversations about how texts like this shaped a historical narrative of dehumanizing “the other,” and how that narrative continues to inform the systemic racism of the contemporary era.
