Year of Wonders
by Geraldine Brooks
Quite a fascinating read. I loved the little touches that Ms. Brooks added for historical authenticity, for example, one of the Quakers in the book used thee and thou. I also found the narration style quite intriguing. The heroine is writing the book as a memoir and only foreshadows a bit and even then the read isn't kept in suspense for long. I have to be honest that when I first started reading it I figured it'd be more about her nursing, and the effects of the plague when it was more about the social responses and implications of the self-imposed quarantine. I'll also admit that the blurb lead me to believe this was a love story to a certain extent and so when Anna's apparent suitor dies in the first chapter I was a bit confused. But without giving away any real spoilers, this is a love story. Just not the one I was expecting when I first started reading. Overall, quite a lovely read. Recommended for those looking for character driven historical fiction featuring a strong heroine.
