The Bride Test by Helen Hoang

4.5

I’ll be honest—I came very close to not liking this novel but I pushed through and, by the end, I absolutely adored it! It’s very different front the first in the series. I’m not really sure how to articulate why, but it has a bit more of a literary feel than the first novel in this series. Maybe it’s because there’s not quite as much sex and nowhere near as fast in getting to the sexy parts. Or maybe it’s because the story of the female (allistic) protagonist seems more complicated and layered than that of the male (allistic) protagonist from the first novel. Either way, it’s the reason I almost didn’t like it but also the reason I ended up loving it!

The story is a bit of a slow burn. It takes a while to get going. It wasn’t until it was about halfway through that I realized it was going somewhere. At that point, though, I began to fall in love with the characters and became heavily invested in their story.Although I initially felt like it was a little forced, I love the way the book comes together and resolves the conflict in the end.

I definitely recommend this book if you enjoyed the first. But even if you didn’t, this is worth reading. It’s not just a romance. It’s a beautiful story about family, the immigrant experience, and the capacity for intimacy even within those of us whose minds work differently. Absolutely 100% adore this novel!
