Blood Like Mine by Stuart Neville
4.0

I picked this up in Asda on the 2 for 9 deal as I needed another book to go with the one i was purchasing. It was a good call as the instant i picked this up i was invested and intrigued. The narration style was an easy fit and i was soon sucked into the unfolding story.

This follows Rebecca Carter and her daughter moonflower (Monica) This mother and daughter duo are on the run for reasons that at this time are not shared with the reader. All we know is there is a whole lot of tension fear desperation and isolation that they are both experiencing as they attempt to outrun whatever is plaguing them .

Its also becomes apparent there is a whole lot more to this than we are being let in on. Rebeca is a guarded vault and she doesn’t trust easily shes become incredibly hardened by what she and her daughter are dealing with. Through a series of letters and transcripts we learn that this was not always the case and the circumstances of Rebecca and Moonflower’s lives are how they have arrived at this point in time and Rebecca will move mountains and do what she must to keep her daughter safe.

The other part of this narrative follows special agent Marc Donner. He’s an unhappily divorced father of two young daughters who wants nothing more than his family back.Marc has a former drink problem and is basically married to his job and for the past two years he’s been fixated  on apprehending what he believes is a serial killer operating cross country and killing and dumping men all who have one thing in common they are known predators.

This swings a pendulum between Marc then Rebecca and Moonflower as the net closes in. As everything becomes more frantic and desperate for all involved Marc just cant let it go even when he knows that it’s more than likely going to end in his own death. He becomes obsessed and fixated on proving what he knows even to the point of losing everything and everyone and spiralling to a dark place himself. Inevitably we do arrive at the ultimate standoff and it was bloody intense, edge of your seat stuff.

If i had to categorise this i’d say suspenseful thriller with horror elements. It was such an absorbing immersive read that i enjoyed a whole lot and imparts the message how far would you go to keep your child safe even if that child could be beyond saving. In Rebecca’s case that answer is showcased loud and clear. Highly recommend this it was a well written riveting read.
