Inheritance by Elizabeth Acevedo

5.0

This book is gorgeous! The prose, the illustrations - absolutely stunning. Even though there is minimal text on some pages, it doesn’t reduce the power of Acevedo’s words. If you have read her previous works, then you know that she has a way of incorporating lines that can be felt like a gut punch. She speaks truth. I As much as it tackles issues of colorism, enslavement, and racism, it is a celebration of Black hair. I love the way she incorporates ancestry and future generations, because it is not only what we inherit, but what we will be passing along too.

Also, the detail of these illustrations to visually convey the message of the words on the page was exceptional. It brought a new experience to the poem.
