American Psycho's Patrick Bateman is a character you love to hate. He is a horrible person in every sense of the word, and following some time in his late 20s with him has truly been infuriating to say the least. He has many things in this world: money, women, knowledge, and most of all, reputation. What he has in status he lacks in humanity; Patrick does not treat other human beings with any semblance of decency. He is a vulgar, disrespectful, violent, and bigoted man. That's exactly how Bret Easton Ellis intended him to be. Patrick Bateman is a masterclass of a character. I am truly amazed at the authorship dedicated to carefully crafting such a detested man.
Not only is the character work phenomenal, but the imagery is just stellar. There were many times when I would find myself making a face, or retching, or looking over my shoulder while reading in public to ensure nobody was reading the insanity taking place on the pages—this book rattled my core. Scenes I didn't know I could conjure up materialized in my mind's eye with ease while reading Ellis' work. I saw Patrick Bateman in my dreams, doing what Pat does best.
Easy 5 star book. Without a doubt! I had no clue what this book or the movie was about, only ever hearing the title and unmistakable name of Patrick Bateman in the mainstream and in social circles. Going into this book blind was a fantastic decision. Slowly was the descent into the madness of this book, but once it began, it couldn't be undone. The first thought of, "Is this guy for real?" quickly spiraled into "How does it get crazier every time?". Ellis puts his foot on the gas and does not let up for a single word.
