And Yet: Poems by Kate Baer

5.0

I enjoyed this very much! Baer has a great way of writing that makes you re-read the poem, searching for clues and hidden meaning. It’s often there, even if I’m the only reader with the meaning I find.

She does a couple of interesting things with And Yet that not all poets do:
1. She ends her lines at really interesting places. She often breaks a phrase or a thought into many lines, breaking at a preposition or verb in a way that forces me to wonder why.
2. She rarely interprets her work for you. She doesn’t tell us her conclusions, if she makes any herself, about the experiences she is cataloguing. In her poetry, which can be quite intimate, she still holds pieces of herself back, maintaining the boundaries of what she shares in her art.

It’s a lovely read, and you should own her three books.
