Fushigi Yûgi: The Mysterious Play, Vol. 1: Priestess by Yuu Watase

2.0

I like the premise of the story but felt that the story didn't flow very well. Everything went too fast. There's some disturbing aspects, like the main character being abused by her mom, and a grown man proposing to a teenager and coming on to her. Plus, a grown woman bullies the main character, a child, almost causing her to drown. I disliked the random slapstick art and the heroine constantly being saved. She was frequently in danger of being sold as a slave, sexually assaulted or killed, and she just lucks out and gets saved. And not a single character comments on how the Japanese and ancient Chinese characters are able to understand each other and speak to each other? I mean, I assume as the reader that it's just part of the magic of the book, but why would no character remark on this? One of the ancient Chinese characters says yo, which really bugged me.The art is just okay. I don't like the busy set-up of the panels. I might continue but am not sure.
