With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa by Eugene B. Sledge

5.0

A thorough detailed telling of the author's World War II experience. Starting with his decision to enlist on too boot camp and then onto battle in the Pacific. The author describes in great detail the two island battles he was in in the Pacific, Peleliu and Okinawa. Sledge describes the closeness of him and fellow marines in the battles. He does not hold back on telling of the apparent incompetence of some who were higher in rank. Those who think of war as a setting where one will see glory and be decorated to no end are falling for an illusion. Sledge makes this clear by depicting war in its truly hellish form. In addition, he tells of the difference between battle seasoned veterans and replacements sent to his unit by the end of the war.
