This Is Why They Hate Us by Aaron H. Aceves

5.0

When I first started this book I wasn't sure I was going to like it, as the main character seems to find every boy/man attractive and instantly thinks they like him (but is just not sure if they actually do or not). But then I thought about myself at that age. I was exactly the same way (oh to be a teenager lol). So it made even more sense to really get into the story.

I honestly think this is one of those stories that is more grounded in reality than a lot of the teen coming out stories. Relationships, depression/anxiety, loneliness, having a best friend that calls you a hoe but totally supports you in all your endeavors, wanting to experience attraction and just feel wanted. Also the main character not knowing if the person he is so infatuated with looks at him the same way.

It's definitely not one of those books that shy away from sexuality and what it means and how people navigate it and the experiences that they have. We all have sexual experience, especially at our late teens when we are figuring out what it all means to us. Books that tend to skip past that are a big disservice to a lot of people.

A really great read.
