The Final Empire
by Brandon Sanderson
The biggest criticism I can lever is that Sanderson isn't history's most clever wordsmith and there are perhaps a smattering of awkward adverbs - no one needs to catch anything "adroitly". Or, even worse, "maladroitly". Yikes. But that's literally it. Otherwise, this kept me doing nothing but listening for 2 days, and I had the audiobook going at 1.5x. Damn engaging.
This was my first Sanderson book and the first straight fantasy I've bothered with in a long while. The fantasy itch reared its horrid little head probably due to me feeling downright stymied by the low-key cliffhanger at the end of Butcher's second Cinder Spires novel. (And, of course, we likely won't have the continuation for years, if ever. Boo.)
Also, I kind of wanted to see if Sanderson could put his money where his mouth was in terms of teaching writing. Well, he blew both expectations away. I'm starting the next Mistborn straightway and I'm pretty sure the man is damn fit to teach his craft.
