Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life
by Bryan Lee O’Malley
I will continue reading and I expect I will like the rest of the volumes more than this one, but what the hell did I just read? The first 90% of the volume is fine. It’s certainly nothing to write home about. Scott Pilgrim is a total awkward loser that’s dating a high schooler but is falling in love with a random girl he is running into and dreaming about. This is all fine, there is a love triangle being set up so there’s drama and Scott is such an awkward loser it’s cringey but you at least want to see what’s going to happen. And then at the end of the volume there is a manga style fight where the band fights against an evil ex boyfriend, demons are conjured (how?), and Scott (the scrawny awkward dude) is revealed to be an amazing fighter. I have no problem with fight scenes that are unrealistic but this volume transitioned from a realistic drama filled love story to a completely over the top unrealistic right comic without any warning or explanation. It was just poorly done. Going into the next volume aware of what this series actually is I don’t expect this transition to be as jarring, but this first volume is massively uneven and inconsistent.
