I was very excited to try another book from Nix as it's been a while since I've read any of his other than the Old Kingdom series. As I've loved everything I've read of his so far I went in with high expectations.

At first I wasn't quite sure what to think, the world started off confusing and following four different characters didn't help matters. Nix has clearly spent a lot of time on the world building, especially where the angels are concerned. However I never did manage to keep up with all of the different angels as every single one is named even if only mentioned in passing. Generally though you quickly get a better idea about what is going on and it becomes quite interesting.

I liked the four protagonists and was quickly invested in their story and the plans that Liliath had for them. There was something charming about quiet Dorotea and Agnez was a lot of fun. Simeon is your classic doctor-in-training and therefore respectable, if a little boring. Henri was my least favourite of the four, but provides a nice balance to the other characters.

The plot was intriguing, with enough mysteries to keep you guessing and while it is not fast paced, it moves along quick enough to never get boring.

Overall it ended up being a really fun read and another enjoyable world from Nix.
